Brandeis’ Career Center is part of Usdan, a student center and support services building from the 1970s. The Career Center had received only minor upgrades since the building’s construction. Brandeis asked IKM to meet with the Career Center staff and develop several design options to meet their current needs.
The Career Center serves an important function for undergraduates, and is often one of the last experiences students have before leaving the campus and is also the location for recruiters to interview students. For these reasons, the appearance and the function of the Career Center is important to the University.
The Hiatt Center expanded into an adjoining space, creating a direct entry from outdoors, in addition to the existing entry from Usdan. The design for the Career Center creates views into the space and visual connections between the program elements, while reorganizing the elements to match their current operations. A new reception desk adjoins the career services area and is open to the staff offices located at the exterior for natural light. Borrowed light created through the use of sidelights, glass doors and transoms bring natural light into the core and visually connect the interior spaces including a conference room for small group presentations, interview rooms for recruiters, a kitchen, and student worker offices.
