Brigham and Womens Hospital Outpatient Tower is a sixteen-story structure built in the late 1970's and at the time was state of the art in patient care design. Over the years, as medical practice has changed and as new techniques and equipment were introduced, the spaces for storage and procedures became inadequate. As a result, egress paths were becoming blocked and program spaces were not efficient. The Hospital retained Imai / Keller to survey and to inventory the entire Bed Tower, identifying the location and function of each piece of equipment. Imai/ Keller made recommendations for changes in both management and architecture to improve operations in the Bed Tower. The project involves 10 floors of the Tower and 40 "pods" (sleeping suites). The renovations took place while the Tower remained in operation. Clean environments and reduction in noise were of primary concern.
