The study for Founders Park, which focused on the Fourth Ward district of Houston, provided a vision for the city to redevelop, restore and save the historic neighborhood located adjacent to Houston's central business district. An area that was remarkably intact in spite of the lack of investment for decades, the Fourth Ward is the site of many properties given to freed slaves after the civil war and contains numerous streets of original structures dating from that era. In addition to the normal constraints facing such projects, the Founders Park study also addressed the land and design control issues for Houston, a city with no zoning regulations. The Founders Park plan incorporates a restored street utilizing relocated shotgun houses from the area, a linear park with a significant church at its terminus, a circle park of an existing stand of live oak trees, and redeveloped commercial corridors along existing major arterials.
