Part of the first phase of the much larger Green Center for Physics renovation the project located a new nanomechanical research lab along the "infinite corridor" for the Department of Material Sciences and Engineering (DMSE). Much of the cutting edge research at MIT is behind closed doors and unseen. DMSE's vision was to visually open up their lab to the casual passerby along the infinite corridor. The success of this vision is evidenced by DMSE's increase in applicants to the major after the renovations were complete. This lab was particularly challenging in that the equipment used in the lab was sensitive to both airborne and structural vibration. IKM designed the container to isolate the space and incorporated structural changes to modify the natural frequency of the concrete slab to be within the acceptable ranges of the equipment used in the lab.
