Weybosset Square is an ambitious plan to organize a four block area of Downcity Providence into the City's Entertainment District. It is anchored by the Providence Performing Arts Center, a 3000 seat proscenium stage theater. The neighborhood is diversely populated including over 1500 students from Johnson & Wales University dormitories on Gaebe Commons in the next block. The heart of the plan is a complex plan for parking which relies on a combination of private, public and institutional structures and a highly coordinated system of shared parking for daytime and nighttime / weekend use. The current proposal also includes a six-screen cinema atop a private garage and new residences and retail space in the former Grant's Block. The cinema is of strategic importance because of the intermittent activity of live theater at the Performing Arts Center and will help create the viability of the restaurants, clubs and retail that support and enhance the nighttime experience.
