In a series of design charrettes over a period of several years, Imai Keller Moore Architects worked with the planning firm of Duany/Plater-Zyberk to formulate a new vision for the urban center of Providence.
Specific projects of the city-wide design charrettes have included the new Johnson & Wales University Master Plan, an entertainment retail plan connecting the Providence Performing Arts Center with the Rhode Island Convention Center, a parking strategy plan, and a study looking at the housing potential of each building in the Downcity area as well as new construction.
The proposal included a six-screen cinema atop a private garage and new residences and retail space in the former Grant’s Block. The cinema is of strategic importance because of the intermittent activity of live theater at the Performing Arts Center and will help create the viability of the restaurants, clubs, and retail that support and enhance the nighttime experience.
