As Associate Architects for renovations, with Payette Associates as Prime, IKM applied town planning principles to organize education, research, administrative, and community spaces for the Department of Physics and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in MIT’s historic Main Group.

Community spaces and other functions needing high visibility were placed along the public corridor and displayed behind storefront walls, while laboratories and offices were rearranged for continuity.

The space renovation plans were coordinated with significant upgrades to the building’s aging infrastructure and solutions to infrastructure problems such as air entrainment.
